PHP & MySQL · Lesson 3 of 11
Creating Database
Create a database with an explicit character set and least-privilege access.
Lesson
Create databases through a migration or a controlled deployment step. Choose utf8mb4 for broad Unicode support, and use a dedicated application database account with only the permissions the app needs. Avoid embedding privileged account credentials in application configuration.
Database creation should be managed separately from request handling.
Further guidance
Use migrations to version schema changes, constraints to protect relationships, and prepared statements for every dynamic value. Scope writes with a precise condition, check affected rows, and use transactions when multiple statements must succeed together. Store credentials outside source control.
Practice task: Create a fresh example for Creating Database. Predict the result before running it, then change one input and explain why the result changes. Test a normal case and one boundary or invalid case where it applies. Compare your output with the example and note one rule you would use in a real project.
Code examples
Creating Database
SQL
CREATE DATABASE app
CHARACTER SET utf8mb4
COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
Expected output
A database ready for Unicode application data
Key points
- Create a database with an explicit character set and least-privilege access.
- Use prepared statements for values and constraints for data integrity.
- Scope writes carefully and verify their result.
